Year 6 Debate - Should Super Shoes be Allowed in Races?

by Year6_Class | Nov 6, 2023 | School Blog, School News

Year 6 have been debating our Picture News question – Should super shoes be allowed in races?

Super shoes are a type of footwear that uses technology to help people run faster. Allowing users to use less energy when their feet push off from the ground and provides security for the foot when in the shoe to make it stiffer. Currently, athletes are allowed to wear shoes for road races with a maximum of 40mm stack height and one stiff plate. Kiptum and Assefa both broke world records, when wearing super shoes. However, not everyone can access the shoes worn, in particular the Nike prototype shoe, which Kelvin Kiptum wore when beating his world record race.

This is a topic of discussion for official running rule makers, as many people believe that the super shoes, which uses technology, are not a true reflection of the times the runners would receive without them. Therefore, question whether it is fair for people to focus on the shoes and not what the runners have achieved.

Year 6 argued for and against using super shoes in racing competitions. Please find attached some of their thoughts and opinions.
