Our first Science topic in Year One was ‘Our Senses’. The children have enjoyed exploring their sense of sight, hearing, touch, taste and smell.
We smelt lots of different things such as garlic, curry, chocolate, caramel, mint and tomato and decided what our favourite smell was.
We wore a blindfold and had to guess what the object was using our sense of touch. We found out that we use our skin to feel things and we explored different textures using our feet in the sensory trays.
We use our eyes to see and found that we could aim the beanbags in the hoop much better without being blindfolded.
We went on a listening walk to identify different sounds in our environment.
We also explored our sense of taste by trying different foods and identifying if they were sweet, salty, sour, savoury or bitter.
What super scientists we have in Year One.
Using our sense of smell
“I like the smell of this one”
“It’s hard to get the beanbag in the hoop when I’ve got a blindfold on”
“We’re guessing what’s in the bag. It’s soft and squashy”
“This feels slimy on my feet”
“This is sticky”
“I love the taste of these. They’re salty”
“This is my favourite. It’s sweet”
“This tastes nice”
